It’s a BIG YEAR, Innovation Explorers! It’s National Fun at Work Day this Friday.
I think it can and should be every day, y’all. Let’s shake it up! Fun is key to unlocking more storytelling, better communications, creativity and all of the things.
Fun at work isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are many play types and that shapes how you show up. There isn’t one way. What DOES matter is that we treat fun as a commitment, not a one-off. We see it as a mindset and corporate value, NOT just activities for ‘happy fun time.’ Download your National Fun at Work Day guide for 2025.Look, there is no one play personality. Whatever way works for you and your team, that’s the best way. TIPS: Keep it fun, light, optional, autonomous and safe. |
3 Lessons on Dropping the Script and Breaking Character from SNL and Timothee Chalamet
I LOST IT so many times on stage over the years. Comedy-wise.
My fave part of sketch comedy? Breaking Character.
It means dropping the script and stepping out as ourselves and laughing so hard – we can’t help it.
Because it’s pure joy. My fave parts of improv and sketches that I performed in shows were when people felt comfortable with each other. That’s TRUST to be able to do that.
Timothee Chalamet cracks me up. He hosted SNL in 2023 and this past saturday, 1/25, and I love that he breaks character – meaning he steps out of his scripted character by laughing so hard. He breaks character a lot – and that is pure joy.
WHAT IF WE DROPPED THE SCRIPT MORE IN OUR LIVES?
We typically ONLY drop the script – the “supposed to do it this way” script – when we feel safe to do so and that says everything to me about trust.
Here are 3 Reminders about Breaking Character – the SUPPOSED TO – in your life:
1. Connection happens in moments of vulnerability.
Authentic moments break these scripted barriers we have for how things are SUPPOSED to go. Lesson: can we be more vulnerable?
2. Spontaneity connects because it has energy.
Being present in the moment is everything. And it’s OK to embrace that imperfect moment because you catch the giggles! Lesson: being present and enjoying the moment is amazing! Perfect is overrated.
3. We laugh because we trust.
Breaking character – the script in every day life – is easier when we trust each other and it speaks to the power of trust in the work and life ensemble. Some might say that is a ‘failure.’ It’s not. It’s a gift…..My fave scenes are the times I lost it laughing in sketches or improv scenes because I KNEW people had my back. Lesson: Can you say that about your team? You should be able to.
The big takeaway: Let’s drop the script in our lives way more…good things happen when we do.

Happy National Fun at Work Day! Timothee Chalamet would heartily approve.
